California Geriatrics Society, founded in 2001 by a multi-disciplinary
group involved in eldercare, came together as the California
Chapter of the American Geriatrics Society. This was during the
same year that well respected universities, UC Berkley and UCLA
filed a joint report which announced, "Forty years from now, the
state [CA] will have 172 percent more adults over age 65 than it
does now and 200 percent more adults over 85..."
The year of 2001 would be the year that members of California
Geriatrics Society took action to commit their resources and
address current and anticipated issues in aging, along side those
already receiving attention, such as Wellness and Injury Prevention,
Medical Ethics in Aging, and the implications of DNA damage and
functional impairment (as studied by the National Institute of
Environmental Health Sciences).
The progress of the American Geriatrics Society and its California
Chapter is exciting! And, they are delighted to extend an open
invitation to professionals committed to the mission of:
- Collaboration with health care providers in all disciplines to
increase knowledge, deepen understanding, refine skills
and promote the development of standards of practice.
- Education for California consumers, and training of new
professionals to meet the needs of our elderly in the field of
geriatrics.
- Advocacy for the elderly by joining efforts to improve senior
health care in California.
- Promotion of specialized training in
geriatric education and research
- Endorsement of exceptional graduate
students committed to programs that
meet current eldercare needs and
possess promise and talent to
address the future needs of an aging
population.
- Providing exceptional aging
resources and links to state and local
representatives willing to address
and resolve issues related to seniors
in California.
